Google enters cellphone battle

Well the rumors have finally been confirmed. Google is releasing free software for cellphones that their mobile division (formally a startup called Andriod.Inc) has been working on for over 3 years.

This software will obviously be in direct competition with other cellphone software providers being free and all while the others (MS, RIM, Palm etc) charge for theirs.

Add to that it will most likely be an open platform it could quickly gain market share. Being open will encourage developers to create all manner of cool software for the phones.

You will, however, have to wait until 2008 and subsequently buy a new phone as the minimum requirements for the so-called software stack is a 200MHz ARM 9 processor.
