Sun Microsystem Eco Tour Ends
Yesterday marked the end of Sun Microsystem Europe's Eco tour 2007. The tour, using a hybrid bicycle, was used to highlight locations throughout Germany that either used energy efficiently or produced energy efficient consumer products.
The tour was also used at the same time to highlight and promote Sun's own energy efficient CoolThreads server family. According to Sun if all the servers in the world switched to CoolThread servers there would be a savings of $14 Billion in energy costs per year!
A lot of the energy used in data centers is for air conditioning, if operating temperature of the CPU dropped significantly the energy consumption used in data centers would also drop giving you a savings. It stands to reason then that if the CooThreads server family by Sun runs at a cooler temperature, without sacrificing performance, then data centers have the best of both worlds. They can reduce their carbon footprint, save on energy costs and still provide their customers with high performing servers.
