Sun Microsystems to Reduce Workforce by 18 Percent

The announcement by Sun Microsystems today stating that they plan to trim their workforce by up to 6,000 employees should come as no surprise to anyone given the huge losses reported for the last quarter.

The triming of the workforce is expected to reduce costs by upwards of $800 million per year. The reduction in workforce, however, doesn't come without a price. Sun expects to incur charges of upwards of 600 million over the next twelve months during the execution of their restructuring plan. In addition to cutting it's workforce by up to 18% Sun will be aligning itself into new business groups "Application Platform Software", "System Platforms", and "Cloud Computing & Development Platforms".

Whether the restructing produces tangible results or not is a question to ask again this time next year.

This isn't the first time Sun has cut it's workforce. According to a newspaper archive from October 12 2002 sun was preparing to cut upwards of 8,000 employees.

duncan's Gravatar do you suppose this massive job cut is at all connected to Sun paying $1billion for MySQL in February?
