Adobe Media Player Released

Yesterday, April 9th, Adobe announced the release of their new Media Player. The player is capable of playing FLV (Spark or VP6 codec) or MPEG-4 (H.264 codec) format videos.

I took a test-drive of the player when it was announced on the adobe labs website and I thought the quality of the videos played through the player in full-screen mode were quite good.

Naturally results will probably vary depending on the quality of the video as well as the quality of your video card. The good thing is that it does support hardware acceleration (in full screen mode).

You may not yet have a great selection of videos, TV or movies to watch right now but I don't think it will be too long before you can watch your favorite TV shows through your Adobe Media Player.

Could this become a serious competitor for iTunes?

The question may be answered by how quickly Adobe can make content available.

For now though I have downloaded the non-beta version of Adobe Media Player and plan to try out a few TV shows and compare it to iTunes to see if I notice any difference.
