British School to Implement Facial Recognition System
The UK government is, in my experience, a rather paranoid bunch. The network of CCTV cameras around the country, while there for "our safety", also kind of gave me the creeps with the "whole big brother is watching" feeling when ever I stepped out side. Now UK Schools, in a flash of "brilliance", are getting into it with St. Neots Community College leading the way with a facial recognition system developed by UK firm Aurora
Biometrics in Schools
St Neots isn't the only UK school to introduce forms of Biometrics another UK school implemented a finger printing scanning at libraries in order for students to check out books from the school library.
While the technology it self is fascinating and provides a great proving ground for the technology, the idea of implementing biometrics at schools is just a little disturbing. But if you look at it from a purely Orwellian view what better age to start than in elementary school.

That's really quite an interesting story. The Nanny State starting to log prints and details at school. I'm sure the intended use of the system (for example the library booking) is purely innocent, but the mind does start to wander.
Mind you, having grown up near St Neots and know people from there, I'm fairly sure that most of the youths will be used to being chipped or tagged, albeit usually with an ASBO and an ankle bracelet. :)
