ThinkPad W700ds: The Dual Monitor Laptop

The first thought that popped into my head when I stumbled upon this little tidbit of news about the Lenovo ThinkPad W700ds was "oh my God why?" A laptop with 11/2 monitors. The Monitor is, I believe, the largest consumer of power for a laptop, so why throw in another monitor?

The apparent point of this notebook is to be more a portable workstation and less a laptop for the road. Besides at 11 lbs thats a beefy little bugger to carry around. The weight and dimensions of this laptop make it a bit of a exception to the current trend of lighter and thiner, and the whole Netbook line of light-weight and low cost.

I'm not sure where Lenovo is trying to go with this "laptop" or what market segment they are trying to target, but the few times I have traveled with my little 15 Inch laptop was enough. After a few hours carrying the damn thing around in the airports it starts to wear on the shoulder.

Coupled with the weight and the over 5k price tag they are clearing targeting a completely different segment of the population than I belong to.

iBrent's Gravatar It's like the SUV's of laptops. What I don't get is the specs on their website are not that great for this. 2 gig ram? One video card? 160 gig harddrive? I guess the extra cost is in the side view mirror of a monitor extension.

No thank you.

ThinkPad W700ds's Gravatar Frankly, just one screen on the side looks like a horrible growth. If this had dual sliding screens, THEN AND ONLY THEN, would it peak my interests. What gets me is that it would be so much more logical to just make the whole screen larger and lighter with OLED technology.

Daryl's Gravatar have you seen the dual sided laptop yet, check it out on Youtube, type in Double Vision Laptop. This is a new product just out that has a viewing screen on both sides, so multiple people can see what is on the screen without all bunching to one side of the laptop.
