Java is dead! Long live Java

Java 5 has reached it's "end-of-service-life" yesterday. Java 5 entered Suns "hospice" for software on April 8th, 2008, and passed into the oblivion on All Saints Day (somewhat fitting really).

If you are still running Java 5 somewhere it would be a good idea to take the time to upgrade to Java 6, though I somehow doubt that too many professional products have not been updated (at least one would hope).

Happy Coding...

darren's Gravatar Java way back had this grandiose plan of allowing IT not be tied to any one platform (Windows, OS/400, UNIX, Linux, etc). It was a nice dream, but Sun did a poor job of making its upgrades backward compatible that Java never became as popular as it could have. Too much work to test every application with the seemingly endless patches.

I would say that there are many "professional" products not yet fully regression tested with Java 6. At my previous company there were still enterprise apps which required 1.4 and were not going to be upgraded to work with Java 6 anytime soon. Fortunately it is possible to separate out the different versions on the same platform, it is just a pain.

I would love to see Java just fold and everyone rewrite their apps with some server side scripting language with JavaScript to control the user experience.

r4 card's Gravatar Hi...
Don't worry, this is not any kind of threat but good news about new version of Java 6.
