Would You Install Chrome OS?

Google Chief Erich Schmidt in an interview claimed that the upcoming Chrome OS will be on millions of computers, though doesn't have any hard figures.

Google anticipates taking some market share from Microsoft.

I think that Google has a great search engine, and maybe even a great phone (although I only played with it in the shop), but an operating system? I'm more than a little skeptical, not because they don't have the brains to pull off a full blown OS, but more because of what what Google does. Google collects information and uses it for profit through, among other things, advertising. There were quite a few concerns over the Google Chrome browser, although dismissed paranoia still exists over when and what Google Chrome communicates with Google.

The question is, would you install an operating system from Google on your computer?

TJ Downes's Gravatar No.

If I want Linux I'll stick with one of the proven flavors that (CentOS!) doesn't have a hidden agenda and isn't stripped down to limit my experience. But then again netbooks are a bit of a joke to me.

Steven Brownlee's Gravatar Absolutely, on a netbook for my wife. She uses the crap out of her netbook and it's most likely the most valuable and productive gift I've ever given her. Have an OS by Google that allowed her to quickly find, publish and analyze data would be incredible.

George Bridgeman's Gravatar Would you buy my car?

What other entirely hypothetical questions can we come up with?

George.

Mihai Baboi's Gravatar I would at least give it a try. As for the concern of the OS sending data to Google. I'm not worried for two reasons. First, I've got nothing to hide. Second, I don't know what Windows is sending to Microsoft right now, it could be doing the same thing for all I know. When Google Chrome first came out I tried it and liked it. I don't use it as my primary browser, yet, but it could replace Firefox if Mozilla keeps making it bigger and bigger. For me, if it's a user friendly Linux, it's cool.

Jeff Self's Gravatar Would I install Chrome OS on my desktop? No way. Would I install it on a portable internet device? You betcha. Chrome OS is going on netbooks for now. But netbooks are going to die off. They are going to be replaced by portable devices. Think of small tablets, or devices like iPod Touches or Archos devices, or Nokia 770's. This is where Chrome OS will shine.
