The Apple iPad

The much rumored and anticipated announcement was made yesterday at the Apple Media event by Steve Jobs. The Apple iPad, which looks much like an over-sized iPhone or iPod comes with all the bells and whistles that both of the smaller versions come with, only bigger.

The iPad, according to the features on Apple.com, can run around 140,000 apps from the App store, comes with WiFi or GSM or both, and in sizes from 16Gb to 64Gb and ranges in price from $499 to $829.

So are you going to run out and get one when they come available?

***Update***

One big thing I missed to mention yesterday is that since the iPad is the same OS as the iPhone or iPod you can't experience the Web in it's true form. What do I mean by that? Well for one thing you will not be able to see any flash content, and we all know how ubiquitous flash is these days. How many popular websites don't use flash (outside of Apples own website)?

Claiming to be the best way to browse the web is one thing, but without support for flash it's going to be a very small portion of the web.

Sam Daams's Gravatar Yes :)

What we need now is an app to code coldfusion in it, preferably cfeclipse or some such.

Mark Drew's Gravatar They should have added a front facing camera, I mean, just perfect for those video conferences don't you think? iChat on it would have been awesome!

I would love one of these for flights to be honest. I have been thinking about getting a kindle but this kicks arse on that front.

Mark Drew's Gravatar Well, I can't say much yet, but the important part will be to see if you can run CFML on it ;)

Gary Gilbert's Gravatar Isn't it basically the same "OS" as the iPhone, meaning its not full version of osx snow leopard, meaning you can't install anything on it other than apps from the app store?

Dan G. Switzer, II's Gravatar @Gary:

It's essentially a giagantic iTouch. There are some unique UI elements, such as drop down menus and pop-ups, but it's going to be running the same OS as the iPhone/iTouch. I can certainly see the appeal to those who have a need for a eReader. It's in the same general price range, but can do a lot more.

However, it seems more useful to get something like a Tablet PC. The biggest advantage I see to the iPad over a Tablet PC is the battery life (if the iPad really will do 10 hours of video playback.) Tablet PCs aren't going to give you that kind of battery life.

dave's Gravatar No real use for me but is kinda cool, you can already tell it's gunna be a massive hit for games and would be perfect for my mom.

I don't see why you couldn’t run cfm on there just get the dev sdk and make your own lil iphone app with railo/resin running it and you can install it, i mean "debug" it lol without going through app store so why not?

Jake Munson's Gravatar I'm not going to buy it. Dan's right, it's just an oversized ipod touch. And it's a lot less portable than the ipod touch. I don't get it. And believe me, I've read a LOT about it, so I'm not ignorant of it's capabilities. I just don't get it.

Gary's Gravatar @Jake,

Im not sure I get it either, I've checked the features and read reviews and all that, and Im not overly impressed.

I guess I should be given all the hype, but quite frankly Im not. It is a cool idea for watching videos or something but thats about the only use case that I can think of at the moment.

Jake Munson's Gravatar And that's the problem, Gary. You, like others, can think of one or 2 small use cases where they'd like it, but are those worth $500 (at minimum)? Usually no.
