Magic Mouse Eating Apple Bluetooth Keyboard Batteries

The new Magic Mouse from Apple apparently drains the batteries in the Apple Bluetooth keyboard.

According to forum users the problem only happens with OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) when using the Magic Mouse in combination with Apples Bluetooth keyboard, when using a different Bluetooth keyboard from another manufacturer the problem didn't show up.

The problem, according to the forum users, is probably being caused by communications issue between the two Bluetooth devices preventing the keyboard from going into energy saving mode.

Do you have both the Apple Keyboard and a Mighty Mouse, if so what is your experience with the lifespan?

Tom Mollerus's Gravatar The forums make it sound like the batteries die within a couple of weeks. Is that what you're finding? I've had a new Mac with wireless keyboard and magic mouse for under a week, so I haven't had the problem happen to me... yet.

dave's Gravatar I got the mm for xmas and the batteries died yesterday and I'm not using the bluetooth keyboard, I have one but am using the wired version so I doubt it's the keyboard. Of course the mouse should use batteries faster than a reg mouse but i thought it wouldn't be this fast.

Edmund's Gravatar I have both the Magic Mouse and the Wireless Keyboard, and I'm now on a second pair of new batteries on the keyboard in about 4 weeks or less, so yes it is happening for sure.

Joe's Gravatar I have both, on an OS X 10.5 setup, and I can confirm this is happening as well.

Previous to using the two together, I can't even tell you how long the keyboard lasted (it was significantly long enough that it was no issue).

Since about December 20th, I've replaced my batteries twice. The first set, I wasn't sure if they were 'new' or not so I had initially thought that was the issue. However the second set were new, and lasted maybe 3 weeks. I leave me computer on all day/night, so it is likely that they never went into energy saving mode, and the keyboard was on for about 3 weeks straight.

To temporarily solve this problem I've been shutting off my keyboard when I leave my mac.
