Standard Website Width

Just about everybody has an LCD monitor these days and I have started noticing that the width of fixed width websites have increased from the previous 776 pixels all the way up to 1000 pixels.

As you see from my site I am still currently sitting at 776 pixel width and have been debating on whether I should A) think about a complete redesign or B) Widen out to about 970 pixels.

So what resolution monitor are you currently using to view my blog?

Dumb question above deleted, the real question is:

Based on your monitor resolution do you think I should widen to the 'new norm'?

***UPDATE***

After doing some additional Googling and looking at sites like ProBlogger and CopyBlogger who make their living blogging and the comments left by you, I can say with some certainty that the current standard website width is 960px.

Puzzelhead also mentioned this in his comment below and directed me to take a look at the 960 Grid System, which I did.

As you may have noticed I have updated the width of my blog to 960 pixels and have also increased the font size slightly.

This will do for now until I can get a new design for my site built.

Charlie's Gravatar Hi Gary,

I've seen in your source code that you're using google-analytics.

What are the stats about the resolution?
This doesn't help?

cheers
Charlie

puzzlehead's Gravatar Have you checked your stats? I see that you're using Google Analytics/Urchin and they give a decent breakdown of monitor resolutions. I'm reading at 1280x1024.

The 800x600 'standard' has pretty much waned over the past 3 years. I believe the new, unofficial standard for fixed width is 960, hence all the new frameworks which are pimping that width like the 960 Grid System ( http://960.gs/ ) and Blueprint ( http://code.google.com/p/blueprintcss/ ).

The thorn in my side is looking at my stats and noticing that the resolutions keep increasing. That makes creating things like Large Background designs a little clunky.

Gary Gilbert's Gravatar @puzzelhead I've heard of the grid system and thats why the A question, whether I should freshen up with a redesign, or just squeeze a bit more life out of the current design and widen up the background image and header image...

I would like to have a new design but honestly I just don't have the design skills.

Ive looked at the stats...the real question should have read
"based on your monitor resolution do you think I should widen to the 'new norm'"

Lola LB's Gravatar Yes . . widen the screen and jack up the base font size.

Brian's Gravatar Not every one browses with their monitor maximized. I almost never do so while you could have 90% of you users with 1600 width monitors that may not be the size they are browsing.

I think the width of the site should be relevant to the content that is being presented. If you have enough to fill the wide site then do it but if not squeeze it in a bit.

Gary's Gravatar you raise a good point Brian. Not all my posts are all that long which would make the posts look shorter...

I could increase the font size at the same time, and increase the size of the right column (that could do with a bit more space)...hmm think I will play around a bit and see how it looks.

Thanks for the input!

Gary's Gravatar Ok as you can see I have widened to 960 and boosted up the default font size as well.

Your feedback is welcome.

Darren's Gravatar When the text area gets too wide it becomes harder to read.

I think most people are moving to cheap laptops for everyday browsing. Those cheap laptops are 1366x768. So I would say that 900 for the text area and the rest for navigation.

BTW - Mine is at 1680x1050. Your font size is fine, the text could be slightly wider.

choco's Gravatar well, i'm not an expert here but i would just like to ask if there is any default width on any sizes of monitors?

Nathan's Gravatar I've struggled with this some in the last while.

Our website looks great on my computer, but looking at it on other computers makes it look somewhat tiny.

Good advice! The 960 width here looks great on my computer, so I think (when I can) I'll transition over to it on our site.

Marcus's Gravatar Are you still using 960px as your width? I am using 1000px for my site.
