Flash 10.1 for Mobile beta
I read an article yesterday by Nick Saint on Flash for Smartphones, Nick claims that its terrible.
He does add the caveat that it's still in beta, and the video he does to show some of the functionality isn't bad, but his speed comparison for page loading between the iPhone and the Nexus is like comparing apples to oranges (no pun intended).
I should point out that I don't own a smart phone. My Sony Ericsson K501i is perfectly suited to my current needs and I have no intension of forking over 5-700 for a smartphone at this time (though if anyone wants to give me one as a gift I wouldn't complain). Therefore whether or not a smartphone supports Flash or not is really irrelevant to me at this time.
That being said Nicks speed comparison is pretty lame. With an iPhone, Google Nexus and an HTC Android he loads a page that contains Flash and then says that the Flash enabled phones load slower than the iPhone, DUH! If I disable Flash in my browser I bet a lot of the sites I visited would load a hell of a lot faster, I mean there is less content to load, expected behavior.
His test wasn't all as lame as the speed test as he did show some remaining weaknesses in the Beta. When scrolling pages that contain Flash the scrolling is pretty choppy, the Flash objects don't scroll properly, and there are some resizing issues still to iron out. But it's still in Beta. I've tested some Beta products from Adobe, they are marked beta for a reason, and there are always problems and issues with beta software.
Lets wait until the release is out before we hang Flash 10.1 out to dry or brand it as a failure.
